  • a robot imitating a person and equipped with sensors;
  • wraparound screen or VR helmet;
  • stereo sound input;
  • manipulation gloves.

The technology is not as common as video conferencing.

The difference between video conferencing and telepresence

Unlike telepresence, video conferencing is much easier to set up. To be more precise, these technologies have the following differences:

  • video quality - telepresence implies dynamic video;
  • audio structure - for better imitation in telepresence, only stereo sound is used;
  • interoperability - opportunities for manipulation;
  • user experience - telepresence has a much deeper level of immersion;
  • compatibility - video conferencing is much more versatile;
  • software and hardware - for online meetings are more common (for example, iMind or other applications).

When is telepresence useful?

Telepresence requires little more than a computer with a webcam and a headset. This is the reason for the complexity of its implementation in some situations. Although for others this may seem like an indispensable part:

  • if you have already invested in this technology and have an equipped office;
  • if you find it more efficient to use presence simulation technologies to communicate with your partners from all over the world;
  • if you are looking to make remote business communication the default for your company.

Much depends on the specific situation, so decide depending on the context of your circumstances.

Because videoconferencing is so much more convenient, you can use it in any situation you see fit. But as for the moments when regular online meetings are the best solution, we would highlight the work of distributed teams and the rapid development of the company. Telepresence vs video conferencing - which one to choose?

Both technologies mentioned above have their pros and cons. The best use cases vary, so to use them productively, you need to pay more attention to the specifics of your situation.
